Are you neglecting your hard surfaces?

General Suggestions:

Certain care requirements will vary according to the type of flooring, but these tips will be of help for any hard surface!

• Sweep Often – Any type of hard surface floor will benefit from regular cleaning and dust removal.  Neglecting regular sweeping allows small dirt particles to accumulate and become abrasive to hard surfaces.  Foot traffic and soil cause unavoidable deterioration to flooring, but committing to a regular cleaning routine will greatly reduce the wear time of these surfaces.  Sweep or use a dust mop daily for best results.
• Clean Spills Immediately – Practice diligence when addressing spills!  Standing liquid can stain hard surfaces and the sooner it is cleaned and dried, the better!
• Doormats – Place a doormat outside every door to prevent traffic from tracking in dirt, sand, oil, asphalt, or other abrasive materials.  This is a quick, low-cost solution for any business!
• Curtains, Blinds, and Window Tint – We all know how damaging the heat can be in the Valley of the Sun.  Reduce sun exposure with curtains, blinds, or a professional window tint and prolong the life of your floor.
• Protect with Mats and Rugs – The wheels on your desk chair will cause damage over time!  Protect hard surfaces in areas of high traffic with rugs and floor mats.  Use floor protectors underneath heavy items.

Vinyl:

Vinyl floors are generally quite simple to maintain and care for.  Avoid using mats with rubber or latex backing as they can stain hard surfaces.  In addition to sweeping, your vinyl maintenance routine should also include frequent mopping.  A consistent mopping schedule with occasional deep cleanings will extend the life of your floor!  Often, committing to these sorts of routines is difficult and time consuming, so a janitorial service is the preferred option!

Linoleum:

While vinyl floors are made from synthetics, linoleum flooring is made from natural ingredients and can have a notably long life span when cared for properly.  Most manufacturers recommend specific types of wax to maintain linoleum, whereas vinyl manufacturers usually caution against using wax.  Use damp mops to clean linoleum between wax treatments and be sure to wipe up spills quickly.

Hardwood:

Regular cleanings are the key to maintaining that beautiful wood floor!  Avoid using oil-based soaps or detergents as they can cause buildup over time.  As stated in the general tips above, it is wise to minimize sun exposure to prevent fading of natural wood floors.  Educate yourself on the specific type of wood you have chosen and select appropriate care techniques based on that information.
